Kirkella CC 207 all out (43.4)
MNDCC 208/2 (40.2)
MNDCC won by 8 wickets
MNDCC travelled to Willerby for their first away trip of the season and emerged victorious thanks to an outstanding run chase led by talented youngster Ruben Syrett (112*).
All eyes were on the toss on a warm early season afternoon with the excellent ground looking perfect for batting first. The home side called correctly and elected to bat. Left-arm seamer Colin Suggitt opened the bowling with the ever-reliable spin of Jack Riby from the Pavilion End. Early pressure was applied and Suggitt was rewarded with the key wicket of captain Brocklesby LBW for 8. Riby followed this with a wicket himself, dismissing opener Marriott for 6 thanks to a smart close catch by Tom Walgate. The home side were struggling with the score 14-2. A strong 3rd wicket partnership of 47 steadied the ship for last year’s Division 3 champions but when Sherman was bowled by Shaun Tate with a superb spinning delivery for 17, MNDCC were on top. Mills was caught behind the next over and it seemed that a short afternoon was likely. However, number 3 Mills (48) started to find the boundary with some classy shots, ably supported by all-rounder Robson (47). Two wickets fell either side of the drinks break and then a further one shortly after to leave the score at 116-8. The lower order of Kirk Ella then showed character against some wayward bowling and errant fielding. Opening bowler Burnett scored a quick-fire 30 to take the score past 200. Vice-captain Harvey Dixon eventually managed to mop up the tail, finishing with excellent figures of 6-3. Riby was the pick of the bowlers with 3-27 from his 12 overs. Close of innings - Kirkella 207 all out (43.4).
Captain Ricky Woodmansey and Syrett opened the batting and found it tough against the new ball. Seamers Robson and Burnett bowled tightly to make scoring difficult. The batsmen dug in to battle through the early overs and then began to form another strong opening stand with some elegant shots reaching the fence supported by the rapid outfield. With the score at 95, Woodmansey was caught in the deep off the bowling of young quick Dean for a well-constructed 43. Addy joined Syrett but fell LBW for only 11, trapped in front by spinner Wills. The rate required was 6 an over when Dixon arrived at the crease. This was not a problem for young star Syrett, he played a variety of outstanding shots with timing and power to take the game away from the hosts. He reached his century and finished the game with a breathtaking 112* (19 4s/2 6s). Dixon also made it look easy with 28*.
Syrett was the undisputed man of the match. He showed maturity beyond his years and it was an incredible effort achieving his first senior century. Syrett has started the season in red-hot form - long may it continue!
A huge thanks to Kirkella. The game was competitive and the facilities were excellent. Best wishes for the rest of the season.
