Hornsea Beat 1sts

14 Jul 2022

Hornsea CC 163/3 (25.4 Overs)

MNDCC 162/9 (45 Overs)

Hornsea CC won by 7 wickets

MNDCC travelled to sunny Hornsea on Saturday with a depleted side looking to cause an upset against a strong and experienced home team. The Hornsea captain won the toss and elected to bowl first on an excellent wicket which looked conducive to run scoring. MNDCC’s attempt at setting a competitive total could not have got off to a worse start. They were 8-4 after 5 overs. A cocktail of poor decision-making, loose shots and skilled bowling restricted the batting effort from the start, and it appeared that roles were going to be reversed from the previous week’s thrashing of HICE. However, young Alfie Hutchinson set the example to his more experienced colleagues by digging in and building an innings. He made 18 from 66 balls but more importantly shared a 74-run stand with captain Ricky Woodmansey. There are not many superlatives left to describe the latter’s ability to score runs in all conditions. On this occasion, he battled through when wickets were falling all around him, nurtured the young and inexperienced middle order, then finished with some explosive hitting in the latter stages of the innings. Woodmansey fell agonisingly short of a truly exceptional 100 in the final over, caught on the boundary for 98. He was ably supported at the end by Jack Riby (19*). The innings concluded on 162-9, a great effort following the disappointing start. Like the first game of the season, the evergreen Rich Medforth was the pick of the bowling for Hornsea.

MNDCC knew that Hornsea would come out and look to score early in their reply. Captain Fisher was bowled by opener Col Suggitt for 11 in the 5th over and Moulds was caught by Liam Duggleby off the spin bowling of Riby for 6. With the score at 56-2, MNDCC felt they were in the game however all-rounder Douglas Greibenouw soon took it away from them. He arrived at the crease in a hurry and played some outrageous shots to reach 95* from only 63 balls at the close. It was an innings of the highest quality and would not have looked out of place at a much higher standard. Off spinner Tate bowled well and dismissed wicketkeeper Clappison for 23 however it was all in vain as Hornsea won convincingly with only 25.4 overs bowled.

MNDCC hope to return to winning ways next week as they host Kirk Ella in the battle for 4th place.
