MNDCC 236-5 (45)
Newport 186-8 (45)
MNDCC won by 50 runs
The 1st XI made it back-to-back wins with a comfortable victory over Newport. After winning the toss and electing to bat, skipper Ricky Woodmansey and Ruben Syrett made another excellent start, adding 96 for the first wicket. Woodmansey was hampered by a sore thigh and fell trying to push the score along, holing out to long off for 33. Syrett looked in fantastic touch again, and hit some exquisite drives on the way to 58 before nicking Phillips behind. Harvey Dixon hit a couple of glorious boundaries, but Chapman found some life in the wicket to dismiss him and when Jonny Addy was bowled MND had slipped to 122-4. The in-form Isaac Wilkes joined Tom Walgate at the crease and the pair consolidated before launching a late assault on the Newport bowling to swing momentum back the home side’s way. Walgate fell in the final over for 60, while Wilkes finished with 53* from only 33 balls.
Newport’s reply also started well, reaching 67 before Cockerill took a sharp single to that man Wilkes and was run out by a yard. The dangerous Adam Mitchell hit a couple of maximums but he fell in the next over trying one big shot too many, well caught by Oli Ramsey off the bowling of Shaun Tate. Spinner Tate, Jack Riby and Kieran Gray controlled the scoring rate in the middle overs, meaning Newport never got in a position to threaten the MND total. Ricky Woodmansey took a good catch to dismiss Smith, while Riby returned to bowl Chapman for 32 before Wilkes picked up two late wickets as MND closed out the game.
Man of the match this week went to Isaac Wilkes for his all-round contribution, continuing an excellent start to his MND career.
Next up in the league is a trip to Hull Zingari for what is already looking like a big game, even at this stage of the season.
