Hessle 174 all out (36.2 Overs)
MNDCC 178-5 (34 Overs)
MNDCC won by 5 wickets
The 1sts avoided a potential banana skin on Saturday with a 5 wicket victory over Hessle. Despite missing three key players in Ricky Woodmansey, Jonny Addy and Jack Riby, MND showed great character in beating a side containing several dangerous players.
Stand-in skipper Harvey Dixon returned to the side and promptly lost the toss, with the visitors elcting to bat first. Left-arm spinner Tom Yates has been effective with the new ball in recent weeks and he continued his good form by picking up the first three wickets to fall, ably assisted by sharp catches from wicketkeeper Ruben Syrett and Nick Vogels at slip. Shaun Tate was introduced from the other end and he claimed the vital scalp of Johnson, trapped LBW for 13. This brought the big-hitting Callis to the crease and he blasted his way to 58 from 51 balls, including three big 6s off one Harvey Dixon over. However, Tate was in good rhythm and kept a lid on the scoring rate at one end while also chipping in with a couple of wickets to ensure that Hessle nearly got away from the hosts. Col Suggitt returned and picked up the key wicket of Callis, caught at long on by Tom Walgate, and after this the innings subsided quickly as Hessle lost their last 5 wickets for 27 runs to finish on 174 all out.
Dixon took on the responsibility of opening the innings for MND and attempted to get the innings off to a positive start. However, that man Callis had his tail up and came flying down the hill to bowl Dixon in the first over and then trapped Ruben Syrett LBW with one that kept low. Nick Vogels looked in sublime touch, hitting six boundaries in his 28, but Callis produced a superb Yorker to bowl him and leave the hosts 45-3. Isaac Wilkes also looked in fine form before top-edging a pull to be caught for 14, while Mike Anderson made 14 before he was bowled by another shooter from the lively Bilal as MND slipped to 103-5. This brought Tate in to join Tom Walgate. The pair knew that the required run-rate was never going to be a concern on a lightening-quick outfield, so batted sensibly to see off the threat of Bilal and then the returning Callis. They added an unbroken 75 for the 6th wicket to steer the home side to victory, Walgate finishing on 44* and Tate 46*.
Man of the Match went to Tate for his vital runs and taking 3-42, with notable mentions for Yates (4-42) and Walgate. Next week, the 1sts host Sutton and will be hoping to extend their winning run.
