MNDCC 194-8 (40)
Broughton CC 155 all out (38.4)
MND won by 39 runs
The 1st XI progressed to Round 3 of the Voneus Village Cup with victory over Broughton CC. The visitors had made the trip north from Lincolnshire and fielded first as Ricky Woodmansey again won the toss and elected to bat. Left-arm seamer Shaun Clark had been identified as the Broughton danger-man and he duly had Woodmansey caught behind for 10. Fortunately for MND, Ruben Syrett continued his imperious early season form and his 80 was the mainstay of the MND innings. He combined sweet timing with brutal power, hitting nine 4s and three 6s. When he fell, the innings faltered slightly, but the other man in red-hot form, Isaac Wilkes, took the MND innings forward with 39 from 33 balls. He was well supported by Shaun Tate (17), taking the home side up to a total of 194.
MND knew they had to start well with the ball and opening bowlers Colin Suggitt and Jack Riby stepped up to the mark. Both bowled exceptional opening spells, reducing Broughton to 15-3 with Suggitt claiming 2-14 and Riby 1-9 from their 8 overs apiece. This start meant Broughton were well behind the required rate and had to take chances against the change bowlers. Shaun Tate was hit for a few lusty blows but could quite easily have claimed wickets, while Tom Yates bowled superbly to heap up the pressure on the Broughton batsmen and deservedly claimed 4-14 as the visitors fell to 107-9. The final pair frustrated MND for a while before Harry Newlove polished things off to take the hosts through to the next round.
Man of the match was Syrett, his innings proving to be the difference between the teams and taking him past 300 runs for the season already.
The game was played in a good spirit throughout and we wish Broughton the best of luck for the rest of the season. MND will take on Ackworth from the South Yorkshire League in Round 3, with the game due to be played at Middleton on Sunday 22nd May.
