MNDCC 1st XI 224 all out (44.5)
Hornsea CC 1st XI 227-6 (42.5)
Hornsea won by 4 wickets
MNDCC hosted a strong Hornsea side at Middleton on a sunny but blustery opening weekend of the 2022 season. Skipper Ricky Woodmansey won the toss and elected to bat on a green and true surface.
The new look opening pair of Woodmansey and Ruben Syrett played positively and accumulated boundaries in a pleasing stand of 86 to see off the danger of the new ball. However the experienced Medforth was a constant danger with controlled lines and lengths and was rewarded for his efforts by dismissing talisman Woodmansey LBW for 41. Wicketkeeper Jonny Addy (35) joined Syrett at the crease. Medforth picked up the vital wicket of Syrett (48) with an excellent delivery which was the last ball of his impressive 12-over spell (2-36). The innings was in the balance at this point. A flurry of 3 wickets fell to swing the game in Hornsea’s favour however some power hitting in the latter stages from Isaac Wilkes (47) and Kieran Gray (14*) enabled MNDCC to reach a competitive total of 224 at the close.
Hornsea’s reply got off a blistering start. Despite a close LBW shout first ball, captain Fisher was aggressive in his approach. Nursing a hand injury following a fielding incident, he found the boundary with ease and eventually fell for a rapid 74. Clappison provided excellent support and the game was running away from MNDCC after a quick fire 101 opening partnership. However the home side didn’t give up and were rewarded with the key wickets of Clappison (45), Griebenouw (1), Moulds (15), Battye (3) and Wallace (0). With the chase at 170-6, a MNDCC victory was looking possible however the class of Medforth shone through as he guided the away side to victory with a well-constructed 51 not out. He was ably supported by Butterworth (22*) as Hornsea reached their required total with 2.1 overs remaining. Spinner Jack Riby (2-38) and debutant Gray (2-28), who had a very impressive first game for the club, were the pick of the home side’s bowling.
Medforth was the undisputed man of the match and was the difference between the sides. Best wishes to Hornsea for the rest of their first season in this league.
Thank you to Robin Hood for the teas and continued support of our club. Next up for the 1sts is a trip to newly-promoted Kirk Ella!
