1sts Battle to Beat Beverley

20 Jun 2022

MNDCC 187-9 (45 Overs)

Beverley Town CC 150 all out (40.5 Over)

MNDCC won by 37 runs

MNDCC travelled to Beverley looking to get back to winning ways after a poor showing against Driffield the weekend before. They left with the points following a tight, low-scoring affair.

Beverley won the toss and elected to bowl first on a pitch that offered little in terms of bounce. This looked to be the right decision when opener Ruben Syrett was dismissed in the first over thanks to a sharp catch in the slips. Skipper Ricky Woodmansey and wicketkeeper Jonny Addy battled hard to get used to the conditions and eventually found scoring easier with fluent stroke play rewarded on the rapid outfield. An impressive second wicket partnership of 130 was broken when Addy (61) was caught in the deep looking to up the run rate in the latter stages of the innings. The ever-reliable Woodmansey led by example yet again with a superb 80 however when he was caught behind with five overs left, the MNDCC innings stalled slightly with wickets falling regularly. Tom Walgate contributed well with 19* as the away side posted a par total of 187. I Goforth was the pick of Beverley’s bowling, finishing with figures of 5-45.

Left arm spinner Tom Yates took the new ball again for MNDCC and claimed two early LBW dismissals. Beverley scored quickly from the start and it was clear that MNDCC needed to continue to take regular wickets in order to win the game. A run out (Syrett) to remove the experienced Gillyon was massive to leave the home side’s reply teetering at 37-3. However, hard-hitting from opener Smith (41) and Cammish (31) threatened to swing the game in favour of the hosts. Spinner Shaun Tate was introduced and his accurate bowling created chances that were unfortunately not taken. However, just before drinks, he bowled Cammish to shift the momentum yet again. Woodmansey’s excellent day continued when he ran out the dangerous Smith with a rocket arm from mid off. A wicket for Jack Riby and two more for Tate left Beverley’s chase in a perilous position at 82-8. However they did not give up and captain Thompson (50*) batted superbly to give them a chance. Thankfully for MNDCC, Yates stepped up to the mark to bowl the last two batsmen and give them a well-deserved victory. He finished with impressive figures of 4-30, ably supported by veteran Tate (3-39).

The game was a tight affair and it was very pleasing for MNDCC to come out on top. Hopefully they can carry this momentum forward next week.
