Driffield Town CC 195/8 (45 Overs)
MNDCC 158 all out (42 Overs)
Driffield won by 37 runs
MNDCC hosted Driffield and were comprehensively beaten on a cold first Saturday of June. With both sides pushing for promotion after similar starts to the league campaign, the excellent batting of Nick Dobbin and a strong middle-overs bowling effort from the away team secured the points for Driffield.
The away side won the toss and elected to bat. This looked to be the wrong decision when the spin of Tom Yates trapped the Driffield opener LBW for 4 in the second over. Veteran left arm seamer Col Suggitt also asked early questions with probing deliveries and was rewarded with two quick wickets, both batsmen bowled comprehensively. MNDCC’s tails were up with the score 13-3 however Hogg-Woodmansey (41) and Dobbin (79) dug in to produce an outstanding 117-run partnership to balance the game. The MNDCC bowlers continued to run in for the team and on another day would have had more reward. The innings finished with the score 195-8. Suggitt and spinner Kieran Gray both finishing with three wickets each.
MNDCC’s reply struggled to get going and regular wickets and tight bowling made scoring difficult. Skipper Ricky Woodmansey was the standout batsman yet again with 59 but when he was bowled the game was in favour of Driffield. All-rounder Shaun Tate played nicely for 35* however he ran out of partners and was left stranded after an outstanding direct hit run out from the boundary to finish the match. Southwell was the pick of the bowlers with 2-20 from his 10.2 overs.
It was a chastening day for MNDCC. Driffield’s batting effort proved the importance of a big partnership and this was lacking in the home side’s chase.
